Some days, prayer feels pointless. Like you're just talking to yourself in a quiet room. Here's why that's okay, and what to do when God feels distant...
I've been there. Kneeling beside my bed, words feeling hollow, wondering if anyone's actually listening. Maybe you've been there too - going through the motions, saying the right words, but feeling like they're just bouncing off the walls.
Here's what I've learned: God doesn't require perfect faith to hear you.
The Bible is full of people who felt abandoned by God. David cried out "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" Jesus himself said those exact words on the cross. If the Son of God felt distant from the Father, maybe it's okay that we do too sometimes.
When prayer feels dead:
Keep showing up anyway
Sometimes faith isn't about feeling God's presence - it's about choosing to believe He's there even when you can't sense Him. Mother Teresa wrote about feeling God's absence for decades, yet she kept serving.
Change how you pray
Maybe traditional prayer isn't working right now. Try walking and talking to God. Write Him a letter. Pray with music. Scream if you need to. He can handle your anger and frustration.
Remember prayer isn't performance
You don't have to sound holy or use fancy words. "God, I'm struggling and I don't know what to say" is a perfect prayer. He knows what you need before you ask anyway.
Look for God in the silence
Sometimes the ceiling is exactly where God wants to meet you - in the ordinary, quiet moments when you're honest about feeling lost.
The truth is, feeling distant from God doesn't mean you're doing faith wrong. It means you're human.
And maybe that's exactly where He wants to meet you.
